Here&#8217;s why that happens and how to convert a whole batch of photos to JPG for free, without installing anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are iPhone Photos HEIC in the First Place?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since iOS 11 (2017), iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default instead of JPG. The reason is genuinely useful on the phone itself: HEIC uses a newer compression method that produces roughly half the file size of a JPG at the same visual quality, which matters a lot when you&#8217;re storing tens of thousands of photos on a phone with limited storage. Apple&#8217;s own apps \u2014 Photos, Messages, Mail \u2014 all understand HEIC natively, so on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac you&#8217;d never notice the format at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catch is that HEIC support outside Apple&#8217;s ecosystem is inconsistent. Windows can open HEIC files, but only after installing a codec extension from the Microsoft Store \u2014 something most people never realize they need until a photo simply won&#8217;t preview.
