You&#8217;re not imagining it \u2014 modern iPhones record some of the largest video files of any consumer camera by default. Here&#8217;s why, and the fastest ways to shrink a file you&#8217;ve already recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why iPhone Videos Take Up So Much Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the iPhone 12 Pro, Apple&#8217;s default camera settings favor quality over file size: 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR color, and the HEVC (H.265) codec. HEVC compresses better per pixel than the older H.264, but 4K at 60fps with HDR still generates a lot of data every second \u2014 enough that the codec efficiency gets overwhelmed by sheer resolution and frame rate. The result is video that looks great and is genuinely large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Recording Setting<\/th><th>Approx. Size per Minute<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>1080p HD @ 30fps<\/td><td>~60\u201390 MB<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>4K @ 30fps<\/td><td>~170\u2013190 MB<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>4K @ 60fps<\/td><td>~350\u2013400 MB<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>4K @ 60fps + HDR (Dolby Vision)<\/td><td>~400\u2013450 MB<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>ProRes 4K @ 30fps (Pro models)<\/td><td>~3,000\u20136,000 MB<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At those rates, a two-minute 4K\/60 HDR clip can easily land at 800 MB\u20131 GB \u2014 well past what email (25 MB), most messaging apps, and plenty of web forms will accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix It Before You Record: Camera Settings That Actually Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If most of your recordings end up shared rather than framed for a short film, it&#8217;s worth turning down the defaults once in Settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Settings \u2192 Camera \u2192 Record Video<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch from <strong>4K<\/strong> to <strong>1080p HD<\/strong> unless you specifically need 4K for cropping or a big-screen viewing later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drop the frame rate from <strong>60 fps<\/strong> to <strong>30 fps<\/strong> \u2014 60fps is only worth the extra size for fast action or slow-motion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn off <strong>HDR Video<\/strong> if the clip is headed to social media or a device that doesn&#8217;t support Dolby Vision \u2014 non-HDR displays often show HDR footage washed out anyway.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1080p\/30fps without HDR cuts file size by roughly 75\u201380% compared to 4K\/60\/HDR, with a quality difference most viewers won&#8217;t notice on a phone or laptop screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix It After You Record: Compress the Videos You Already Have<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing camera settings only helps going forward. For a video that&#8217;s already sitting in your Camera Roll at 500 MB, you need to compress the file itself. Targeting a stricter size limit (say, under 25 MB for email) pushes the bitrate down further and is noticeably softer, but still watchable for a quick share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why &#8220;Too Large&#8221; Often Means &#8220;Won&#8217;t Open&#8221; Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Size isn&#8217;t the only headache. iPhones often save video as HEVC inside a <code>.mov<\/code> container, and that combination doesn&#8217;t play natively on plenty of Windows PCs, older Android phones, and some web uploaders.
