The useful first question is not “How much can I shrink it?” It is “Does the person receiving it need 4K?” Keeping every pixel and exporting a smaller 1080p copy are different jobs, with different quality trade-offs.

This guide helps you choose between them, set a sensible size goal, and check the result. It is a practical workflow, not a benchmark: the size examples below are calculations, not measured compression results.

Keep the original, then choose the sharing copy

Most phone and consumer-camera 4K footage is 3840 × 2160 pixels. A 1920 × 1080 copy has one quarter as many pixels per frame. That does not guarantee a file one quarter the size: duration, codec, motion, noise, audio and the chosen bitrate also matter.

Keep your original if you may crop, edit, grade colour or watch on a large 4K display later. Make a separate delivery copy for messaging, email or a quick review. Repeatedly compressing yesterday’s compressed copy adds another generation of loss; return to the original for each new export.

Your destination

A sensible starting choice

A 4K screen, or someone who needs fine detail

Keep 4K and allow a larger file; inspect moving detail.

A phone preview or routine review

Consider a 1080p sharing copy made in a video editor.

A strict, small attachment limit

Shorten the clip first, or use 1080p; long 4K footage may not look acceptable at that size.

Future editing or an archive

Retain the original; a small delivery file is not a replacement master.

A size target is also a quality decision

For a fixed duration, a smaller file gives the encoder fewer bits to describe each second. At 4K those bits must cover a lot of pixels. A static interview against a plain wall is easier to compress than foliage, confetti, water or a noisy night scene. There is no single “good 4K bitrate” that guarantees the same result for all of them.

You can estimate the total budget with average total Mbps ≈ file size in decimal MB × 8 ÷ seconds. This includes video, audio and container overhead. The video gets less than the total, so do not assign the whole number to the picture.

For example, imagine a two-minute, 900 MB 4K recording. A 180 MB delivery goal allows about 12 Mbps total; 90 MB allows 6 Mbps; 24 MB allows just 1.6 Mbps. These are illustrative budgets, not quality recommendations or promises that a compressor will hit those byte counts. The 24 MB version asks the same 4K frames to survive on a very small allowance. If it looks smeared, try a shorter clip or a 1080p export rather than assuming another brand can make that trade-off disappear.

A quality-based export takes the opposite approach: you choose the quality and accept the resulting size. HandBrake’s explanation of quality versus bitrate describes why that size varies with the source. Use a size goal when delivery requires it; allow more room when picture quality matters more than an attachment limit.

Compress a 4K video in your browser

RedPanda Compress is useful when you want a smaller sharing copy without sending the source to a server. Processing runs 100% in your browser, so your video stays on your device. The compressor produces H.264 MP4 for broad playback compatibility. A 4K H.264 file still needs a device powerful enough to decode it; the MP4 extension alone cannot guarantee smooth playback everywhere.

Open the compressor and click Choose a File. Select your original 4K recording.

Set Output file size to a first target with room for the detail you need. Keep automated compression off if you want to set the size yourself.

Click Start Compression. Keep the page open. On a phone, keep the screen awake and consider plugging it in.

Download the result. Check its actual size, dimensions, sound and moving detail before sending it or deleting anything.

The normal compression path keeps the source dimensions; the size control is not a 4K-to-1080p selector. There is an exception: after an eligible high-resolution job runs out of memory, the app may retry at 1080p and show a notice. If keeping 4K is essential, inspect the downloaded dimensions instead of treating successful completion as proof.

Browser limits depend on the device. For a 2GB video or a longer 4K recording, a desktop with available memory is the more practical choice; the page shows the current device’s file limit. Local processing avoids upload time, but it still uses your own processor and memory. It is not an instant conversion or a fixed-time guarantee.

When 1080p is the better delivery format

If the recipient only needs a small review copy, reducing resolution can be a better compromise than keeping 4K dimensions with visibly damaged detail. Use an editor or desktop transcoder that exposes a resolution control. RedPanda’s main compressor does not offer a manual resolution selector.

In HandBrake, for example, the official resizing guide describes the Dimensions panel’s Resolution Limit. Choose a 1080p limit, preserve the aspect ratio and review the final dimensions and crop settings before encoding. A vertical clip should remain vertical. Export directly from the original so you do not first make a lossy 4K intermediate and then compress it again.

Do not expect a resolution change alone to determine the byte count. Choose the quality or bitrate as well, and check the exported file. If you need a very small attachment, trimming an unnecessary minute may preserve more useful detail than squeezing the whole recording harder.

Check more than the file size

Play the beginning, a fast-moving section and the ending. Look for smeared faces, disappearing foliage, blocky shadows and unreadable small text. Compare at the viewing size the recipient will use, then inspect full size if fine detail matters. Check audio sync and duration too.

For HDR or footage intended for colour grading, keep the original and use a workflow that explicitly handles its colour format. A small H.264 sharing copy is not a promise to preserve HDR, editing latitude or every piece of metadata. If you only need to change MOV into MP4 for compatibility, see our MOV versus MP4 guide: changing the container and reducing the video data are separate operations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress 4K video without losing quality?

You can often make a useful smaller copy with little visible change, but re-encoding to a smaller H.264 file is normally lossy. Keeping 3840 × 2160 dimensions does not mean keeping every detail. Retain the original and compare the result; avoid universal “90% smaller with zero loss” promises.

Does converting 4K MOV to MP4 make it smaller?

Not necessarily. A compatible stream can be copied into another container without re-encoding, which keeps roughly the same amount of media data. Meaningful size reduction usually requires changing the encoding, shortening the video or reducing dimensions.

Why is my compressed 4K video still large?

It may be long, already efficiently encoded, or full of motion and fine texture. An HEVC source is not guaranteed to become smaller when converted to H.264 at similar visible quality. Give the output more space, shorten the clip or consider 1080p rather than repeatedly compressing the same small copy.

Can I compress a private 4K video online?

Yes, if the tool processes locally and your device can handle the recording. RedPanda Compress works in the browser without uploading your video. Start with a realistic size goal, check the completed file, and keep the original. You can try the video compressor here.

A 4K video can be too large to share even when it is only a few minutes long.
